Find Your Wings
She glides in the air as if the sky has been waiting for her, arms open, dress catching the breeze like a small set of wings. Below her, a father reaches up, steady hands ready to guide, not hold her back. His face carries the mix of pride and caution every Black parent knows well, that balance between protecting a child and letting them fly. In that moment, fear gives way to trust, and trust becomes freedom.
In Find Your Wings, LaKeem captures a familiar truth within Black families. Children are encouraged to dream, but they are also taught how to be aware, how to move with care, how to rise while staying grounded in where they come from. This drawing shows the moment those lessons meet possibility. It is about courage learned through love, and confidence shaped by someone believing in you before you believe in yourself.
Through the movement of ink, LaKeem turns a playful leap into a symbol for growth. The image honors the adults who lift our spirits long before we lift our bodies, and celebrates the children who dare to jump anyway. Find Your Wings is a reminder that the sky is not just a place to reach, but a place we are meant to claim.
