Dreamer of Peace
This illustration centers on a young Black altar boy, caught in a quiet moment of reflection beneath the weight of history, faith, and collective memory. His posture is inward and contemplative, one hand resting near his face as a cross hangs from his neck, signaling devotion, innocence, and moral grounding. Above him, a procession of figures emerges in loose, gestural lines, suggesting elders, witnesses, and ancestors moving through time.
The altar boy becomes a bridge between generations. He stands at the threshold of belief and reality, absorbing the lessons of sacrifice, justice, and restraint before fully understanding the world he is inheriting. The architecture and shadowed forms around him create a sense of enclosure, reinforcing the idea that peace is not passive but learned, practiced, and protected.
Rendered in black ink, Dreamer of Peace reflects on the early shaping of conscience within Black communities, where faith, responsibility, and survival often intersect at a young age. The work honors the quiet strength of those taught to carry hope early, and the belief that peace begins as a discipline long before it becomes a destination.
