The SkyBlue Collection is a painting series exploring Black life, cultural memory, possibility, and the relationship between history and the future. Sky blue operates throughout the collection as a visual language of protection, freedom, and infinite possibility. Hidden America
Painting Collection
Hidden America is an earlier collection of paintings by LaKeem Wilson that examines the political, social, and cultural realities beneath the surface of American life. Created before the development of The SkyBlue Collection, these works use figurative imagery, symbolism, and politically driven narratives to confront race, power, inequality, history, and the contradictions within the American experience.
The collection reflects a period in Wilson’s practice when painting became a tool for questioning the stories America tells about itself while bringing greater visibility to histories and experiences often pushed outside of the dominant narrative. NaturalBorn Illustrated is an illustration series rooted in storytelling, imagination, and LaKeem Wilson’s experiences growing up in South Dallas. Drawing from community, history, music, family, and contemporary culture, the series translates lived experiences into bold visual narratives. The work reflects how environment shapes creativity while documenting the people and stories that influence Wilson’s artistic language.
